Fourth of July, "happy scare the you know what out of your pets day!"

Fourth of July is a day we share with loved ones uplifting our great country, but it can be a terrifying time of year for our loved pets! Please keep them safe! Fourth of July is the time of the year more pets become lost!

So many lost pets around this time of the year because of the fireworks. Starting from the days before, and some even go missing days later because people still set them off.
Here's a few tips to use around this time of the year, and some all year long to keep your furry family members safe!
#1 Make sure all your gates, windows and doors are secured
#2 Make sure you have a current pic of your pet. Especially make sure to have a pic of any unusual markings that can be used as identification
#3 Make sure your pets collars are on and ID tags are up to date with your correct contact information
#4 Make sure your pet is microchipped! & be sure to call the company to check and see if all your info is current and that the microchip is registered. You can add additional contacts such as friends, family or your vet office. I don't know how many pets I scan that either have wrong numbers or the chip isn't registerd. Collars can fall off, so microchips are super important. I cannot stress this enough. They can also be used for proof of ownership
#5 If your pet is chipped and goes missing, call the company to let them know. They will flag the account.
#6 Don't leave your pets outdoors if you know they are afraid of fireworks or unsure of how they will act. Even if you know they are okay, I still wouldn't leave them out when you aren't home. Just to be safe.
#7 You can ask your vet to prescribe an anti anxiety medication for your pet such as alprazolam. NOT a sedative like Acepromazine. Have a prescription for something on hand, just in case if anything else you try does not work. All dogs will differ on what meds work for them, so it's a good idea to talk with your vet days before so you can make sure your pet is okay with the one they prescribe and that it works.
#8 For dogs you can get an Adaptil (DAP) collar at petsmart or on amazon. It's a calming collar.
#9 For cats you can buy feliway spray or feliway plug ins on amazon. I actually just saw that petsmart now carries the actual feliway brand as well instead of just the comfort zone
#10 For dogs and cats you can try composure treats sold on amazon or a thunder shirt sold at petsmart
#11 Keep them inside, maybe in a bedroom with "happy" stuff playing on TV or "happy" music
#12 Keep them busy with stimulating toys
Never leave a dog who's afraid if fireworks locked in a crate. They can hurt themselves trying to get out.
